PUEBLO DE DIOS LUTHERAN CHURCH BUILDING AND MAKING URBAN MISSION
Gangs, drug dealers, prostitution, alcoholism, low-income American families in conflict and undocumented are the image of a city in need, the city of Compton in Los Angeles CA.
For many pastors is not the place to do church "you need a bulletproof vest," a high risk. For a seminarian graduated (2003), with his family, passionated about the mission of the church was the ideal place to plant the Kingdom of God, in an old Lutheran church building soon to be demolished, initiated the new Pueblo de Dios church organization (This May 27th, in the Pentecostal Day, after being a Mission for nine years, Pueblo de Dios will become a Congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America).
SHARING WITH LOVE AND JUSTICE
Pastor Samuel Nieva, after working in South Central Los Angeles with the coalition of Lutheran Churches called New City Parish, planting Hispanic Lutheran missions, decided to move to Compton, his theological critierio mission is grounded in a sentence, which reads: "SHARING THE SPIRITUAL AND THE MATERIAL BREAD". Pueblo de Dios believes in Integral Mission of the church (Holistic ministry), Pastor Samuel say: “we cannot speak of the Word of God and the sacraments if they do not share the presence of Jesus with love and justice and a plate of food a piece of cloth or social action. A story to remember, Benita Polanco is one mother who one day came looking for support with their seven children, now is our director of social ministry of the church that every Thursday feeds about 60 families in the community.
Pueblo de Dios has a sewing-school, to develop qualified people in the garment industry. Has links to community clinics to ensure the healths of the neighborhood, many of its members are community workers as health promoters
ALL YOU BREATHE PRAISE GOD ...
Pueblo de Dios have a joyful worship of God, Liturgical, Contemporary and Latin are mixed in a vibrant worship. Ana Nieva (Director of Liturgy and Christian education) is constantly training new musicians. Every Sunday the message is direct and radical "God's time has come, the kingdom of God is here, turn to God and believe His Word" Mark 1:15
MAKING DISCIPLES
Pueblo de Dios has found ways to be a missionary church. We currently have 2 seminarians who are studying in a theological institute (CHET) to plant missions and later be pastors.
Pueblo de Dios uses the Southern California Lutheran Cursillo as a way to spark the leadership initiative of its members. Pueblo de Dios uses a 3DM tool (Culture Discipleship) whose objective is “disciples making disciples”. We have made the church work much simpler and life of a believer less complicated. The disciples are the Church, extending the Kingdom of God.
